Things to do for your Lawn now before Winter Sets In

download.jpg

We have had an amazing autumn but its almost winter and we have a few tips for you to improve your lawn's appearance throughout winter. Don't attempt too many drastic actions; scarifying or topdressing at this time of year is a definite no no, but a last fertilise for the season and even a pigment treatment can work wonders for your lawn.

During the cooler months lawn's will generally be at their most vulnerable and unable to repair or maintain good health as well as they can in the warmer seasons.

Most Australian lawns are what are known as warm-season grasses; Kikuyu and Sir Walter Buffalo lawns are a few of the most common types and fit into this category. As the name suggests 'warm-season' grasses are actively growing during these months and during the cooler months they slow down and can go dormant; shutting down or discolouring over winter.

This is a protection method that lawn grasses use to withstand freezing temperatures and frost with the grass leaves thinning and drying out and the plant's energy being stored in the lower parts of the grass stem and roots area.

As the weather starts to cool down, so does lawn care with the grass not growing as vigorously as it did a few weeks ago in most cases. As daylight hours decrease, so does photosynthesis, so by increasing mower heights and leaving more leaf it will help increase the food supply to the grass.

Pruning is a great way to plan ahead for winter conditions, as overgrown trees and bushes may increase their shade levels and by the time we notice our lawn has started dying in certain areas, it can be too late to repair the damage.

Use this period as an opportunity to fertilise your lawn, and go for an all round or pre-winter fertiliser that contains higher levels of iron, which is essential for good lawn health throughout these cooler conditions and also gives a quick colour boost to your lawn.

It is important to address any weed issues before winter, as conditions for their survival improve, while at the same time the lawn's ability to fight against them decreases. Winter weeds such as poa (wintergrass), could potentially inhabit your lawn. Treating weeds before they spread is the best thing to do.

Patching up any bare or dry spots will help prevent issues during the cooler months, and will keep your lawn looking good - you can square up any areas with a mattock or spade and fit new turf sections straight onto your lawn. Give us a call if you need a turf roll or slab to patch up areas.

As air and soil temperatures decrease, over watering during cooler temperatures can increase the possibility of lawn diseases or rotting of the thatch latch layer. Aerating your lawn during autumn in considered a good time to do so as the plants are busy enhancing their root zones in preparation for winter and the soil is usually a bit softer than at the height of summer.

Use a garden fork and work to break up the soil or hire an aerator that will make quick work of the job. You will be amazed at the results - just check out any golf course and see how often they are aerating or coring to get more airspace into the soil profile.

Getting the mowing height right is probably one of the most important things now and its a good idea with the next few mows to increase the height and then you can gradually lower it over winter - not taking much leaf off but more of a tidy up.

You will see this on many footy fields around the country as most sports turf curators start to lift the mower height at this time of the year to get a more healthy and robust cushion of turf in readiness for damaging winter sports.

Lawn care doesn't need to be difficult and simple hints from us and the Lawn Solutions Australia team can help with products to keep your lawn in top condition this autumn. If you need any more advice or would like to purchase lawn for patch ups or for your whole backyard call us on 9303 2627 today.

Reasons to Choose an Instant Lawn Solution

Making the decision between lawn and other surface coverings can be a tricky one. Here are a few facts about lawn you should know about when making your final decision.

  • Studies have shown that a neat lawn and garden can add as much as 15 percent to a home's value.
  • A fresh lawn allows you to take a fresh breath right outside your home; lawn takes in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen through photosynthesis; trapping dirt and dust released into the atmosphere.
  • Lawn absorbs sound and greatly reduces noise pollution, especially in urban areas.
  • Lawns can be considered natural air conditioners; lawns cool themselves and their surroundings reducing home cooling needs, and potentially saving you money in the long run.
  • A well kept lawn improves the stability in soil through its deep and widespread roots, which reduces erosion from water and wind.
  • A lawn can provide a welcoming space for picnics or family barbeques, as well as a great spot for your pets to play. Turf is also perfect for recreation sport allowing you and your kids to have the leisure time outside of your home but not have to travel too far.
  • Well maintained lawns reduce the risk of  fire hazards and helps slow the advancement of wildfires. (Hopefully this fact will never need to be tested at your home!)
  • Lawns have been shown to reduce stress and improve wellness. There is growing evidence that natural grass lawns have a therapeutic effect.
  • Plants and their effects on the human body or 'the biophilia effect' is shown to reduce muscle tension related to stress, lower blood pressure, improve attention and reduce feelings of aggression or fear.

Why do we cut our Sir Walter in a 'slab' and not a roll?

Superior Lawns is one of Western Australia's largest growers of DNA Certified Sir Walter buffalo and are the only grower to cut our Sir Walter in a 'slab' format. There are many reasons why we do this style of harvest.

Brighton Reticulation laying Sir Walter Slabs.

When Sir Walter lawn is cut in slabs the whole root profile is attached. With more roots the lawn establishes quicker with less risk of drying out. Rolls have to be cut with less roots to enable the leading edge to be rolled over.

Cutting Sir Walter in slabs enables the consistency of each slab to be maintained providing each slab with a strong base meaning the slab won't fall apart when handled and the edges wont frey. Slabs are shorter and wider then rolls allowing straight lines to be maintained during installation giving a better finish to your job; creating a more established look instantly.

If you would like more information on how to lay Sir Walter slabs or are interested in purchasing our slabs please call 9303 2627 or email sales@superiorlawns.com.au

Fertiliser and the right amount - how do I know?

Fertiliser is food to your lawn; too little and it starves, too much and you won't see it at its peak either. If your keen on looking after your lawn then getting a handle on fertilising is important. There are a few tell tale signs with your lawn to let you know if it needs fertlising.

Too much fertiliser or not watered in properly can create a fertiliser-burn effect on your lawn. Lawn fertilisers come in many varying types and blends. Just take a look down one of the aisles in some of the bigger nurseries and you can get confused as to what may be the best for your lawn. Going back to basiscs, lets look at your lawn being like any ordinary plant. It takes in nutrients and air through the soil and sunlight through the leaves for photosynthesis where the conversions to sugars and energy takes place.  With everything in balance this happens well and the plant will thrive and what we want to do is help keep this process at its optimum.

So in keeping that optimum level of nutrient input for your lawn you can look out for a few tell tale signs when its lacking;

- if you've got pets the green patch left from urine is an obvious giveaway. Urine containing urea is high nitrogen-charged and sometimes you're left with a burnt patch and afterwards a more lush-green area appears.

- this can also be noticeable next to pathways where nutrients - from blown in dust and particles will wash off the path and be more concentrated next to the edges.

- Seed-heads on the grass when it starts to go  into stress, and a yellowing, thinned out appearance, not related to the seasons is also a giveaway that your lawn needs a feed. Clover invading parts of your lawn is also a good sign that your fertiliser regime is wanting as it struggles to grow when nitrogen levels out at a level where your lawn is doing well.

Most Australian lawn types; warm-season grasses that include Eureka Kikuyu, Nullarbor Couch and  Sir Walter Buffalos are able to be fed on a regular basis at around six-weekly intervals and it helps to mix up the applications.

If you talk to any sports-turf curator; golf, stadium or bowling green professional or a turf farmer they will tell you about mixing it up between organic manures and compost top dresses through to fertliser mixes that are usually high in NPK. The NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium) levels are usually the most critical components when it comes to fertilers mixes and you will normally find these elements clearly marked on a fertiliser label.

So Where to from here?

Its best to mix it up between organic and synthetic fertilisers every six weeks or so for a home lawn and it should reach its peak in no time. Make sure you read the label; but generally 20 grams per square metre is recommended in most cases so two kilograms will do an average 100 square metre lawn. Make sure you water as watering is probably the most important so if you don't have an irrigation system, apply before a shower of rain or hand water in well after application.

Fertilising or more so, the lack of it is one of the biggest factors behind poor performing lawns and can be readily rectified with inexpensive, all round fertilisers. We recommend all round fertilisers available from Lawn Solutions Australia. Lawncare doesn't need to be difficult, if you need any more information feel free to call us on 9303 2627 or visit our website or the Lawn Solutions Australia website for tips and tricks to make your lawn the best on the street.
